November spawned a monster pt1

"November spawned a monster" I love that song by Morrissey. Although fortunately this year, November spawned mostly AWESOMENESS in my life. I should have written more about it. But I'm just not inspired like b4 : ( Well things got turbulent about a week ago & these past few days have been especially BLAH. Yesterday & today I was in a rly foul mood but then I listened to certain songs & suddenly felt all FUCK YEAH!!! It's times like that when I'm like "DUDE...I love music".

Yesterday I was running a bit late to day 5 of the YES+ course I’m taking. I was tired, my stomach hurt, I didn’t feel like going at all. But then my bus came & there was room for me to sit & THEN “Tu juego” by Miranda came on my iPod's Shuffle. That was never my favorite song, but I enjoyed it so much yesterday. & I remembered how much fun Miranda’s 1st album was. They’re an argentine band originally associated with the alternative scene. They’re really electronic & danceable, the boys in the band are effeminate, the frontman’s voice is super high pitched, etc. They totally remind me of the last year of high school, 1st year of Uni.

I also recalled this time a friend was telling me about his relationship with his ex & how they were playing games & I started singing this song. Bc Juego is Game in Spanish. There’s also “Ce jeu” by Yelle. Jeu is game in French. I love the Twelves mix of that song. It’s so gr8. That one reminds me of September-Oct 2009.

Then I was like I KNOW, I’LL LISTEN TO "TIRANTE"! What I have on my iPod is actually a mashup of that song (by Ambar) with “My Sharona” by The Knack & I fucking love it. I wish everyone could hear but it’s not online. Ambar is also a local indie (Miranda was initially) electronic band. The lyrics are rly true 2 me. In fact they could sum up one aspect of my year.

(...)

I want you to love me less tensely
to over flow you I must fill myself with you
It’s too tight, the desire becomes tense

The song has something that makes me feel I could put it @ the end of a short film if I ever made one.
"Neighborhood bully” by Bob Dylan (SRY ABOUT THE SHITTY AUDIO THERE) & “The kid with the replaceable head” by Richard Hell & the Voidoids give me the same sensation. I can totally see a black screen with white credits rolling while these songs play in the background. Gotta go, but I’ll continue later.

PS: This blog is already a year old, just realized.

Light grenades

With a heavy heart I must admit to now being certain that I don't like the last Incubus album, "Light grenades". I gave it a second chance...I listened many times... & nothing : ( Maybe their next release will draw me in again? I wonder if Brandon Boyd's solo stuff is any good.

How I got into the Manics

Inspired by the Facebook Meme "34 days of Manic Street Preachers", here's the the story of how I got into the band which is one of my favorites nowadays.

As mentioned before, I first heard MSP around 2001 or so on a mixtape made by Amy Ducky Visel. But the song did nothing for me. That same year MTV would play the videos for “So why so sad” & “If you tolerate this then your children will be next”, but they didn’t do much for me either. Although I kinda liked “So Why So Sad”... & “The everlasting”, which I downloaded probably after someone’s recommendation. I had that burned onto one of my own mix CDs. I probably heard “Faster” at some point too bc I’d read the line “Self-disgust is self obsession honey & I’ll do as I please” somewhere & liked it so much I think I searched for where it was from & downloaded the respective song.

As far as I remember, from the start I was familiar with Richey’s story & found it intriguing but apparently not intriguing enough to read up much.

Fast forward to July 2008. I was in Paris but going to Prague for a few days & browsing CouchSurfing.com. That’s how I found Danny Creer (originally from the UK but living in Praha) who would be my host. It said on his profile that his favorite album was THE HOLY BIBLE by the Manics, who he was a huge fan of. In fact his email started with “dannymanics@” : )

So I went to stay with him for a few days & one of the nights, I think it was the 2nd one, I asked him about the Manics. I love hearing people talk about things they love, things they’re passionate about. & I also love music. So hearing people go on about their favorite musicians is a pleasure for me.

Basically Danny gave me an introductory course to the Manics : P
We listened to The Holy Bible while he cooked dinner.
He showed me videos such as “Stay beautiful” & “Little baby nothing” on YouTube. & also when they performed on Saturday Night Live wearing terrorist masks : P
He had their entire discography so he played me a bunch of songs & told me the story behind them
I was fascinated with the lyrics...it seemed there was always a story behind them
& they were full of references to art, history, politics. Presidents, soccer players, famous crimes, female issues. Prostitution, concentration camps, abortion, pop culture...
Someone once said listening to the Manics makes them go on “scavenger hunts” to find out what they’re talking about.

He also told me a bunch of anecdotes. If I remember correctly, he attended over 10 Manics shows & was there @ Richey’s final gig. & well, they’re his favorite band, so he knows a lot of stories : )

I was hooked. The next day I couldn’t get “Motorcycle emptiness” out of my head. & “Prologue to history”. He copied the discography onto my pendrive. When I got back to Paris & later back home to Buenos Aires, I mostly listened to The Holy Bible @ 1st which was fitting bc it was a very ~dark~ time in my life : P

& in the following months/year I began to listen to the rest of the stuff & well, I became obsessed. A song I associate a lot with the time following my return to Buenos Aires is "Dead trees & traffic islands". & the upcoming summer was full of "Never want again". Although I must admit their discography is so extensive that there are some albums I don’t really “know” yet. But I have heard them all...if I didn’t stop to listen to them over & over enough to know them it’s bc they didn’t captivate me enough the times I did listen, get me? Perhaps it’s just a matter of timing, when you listen to each album.

I also became obsessed with Richey Edwards & to a lesser degree, Nicky Wire.

Wow this is long, sorry! But anyways I am so thankful that Danny (re?) introduced me to this band...I probably would have continued ignoring them if it weren’t for him! & thinking their repertoire was full of songs that did nothing for me, like the ones I’d heard.

Under neon loneliness

...motorcycle emptiness. I have that song in my head. The Manix have been on my mind a bit more than usual bc I'm doing this Facebook Meme called 34 days of Manic Street Preachers that asks things like "Post a photo of your favorite band member & explain why", "First song you ever heard by the Manics", etc. One of the upcoming days is about telling how you got into the Manics, which I think could deserve a blog post.

Although I'm honestly not so sure what to do with this blog. I used to be full of ideas & there were a ton of things I wanted to write about, but it's not really that way anymore : ( Besides, I've finally started using Tumblr. Courtney told me back in April that Tumblrs > Blogs & I don't know if I agree but I feel like blogs are more for words whereas Tumblr is more for photos. @ least I use it mainly to reblog other people's stuff that I like, sometimes uploading my own. Of course the #1 place I choose to display the pretty images I find is in my Facebook albums. So now it' s like... FB, Blog, or Tumblr? IDK. Maybe I'll just continue putting text on here on keep the Tumblr mostly image-oriented.

Well...on another note, I'm watching Gilmore Girls. Season 3. It's cheesy but for some reason I really like it. & of course I dig all the musical references... Rory & her friend have good taste. Not to mention that Dean & Jess (Rory's boyfriends) are HOT.

Milo Ventimiglia plays Jess. But I knew him before GG bc I used to watch Heroes, where he played the very huggable Peter Petrelli. Can't remember how many seasons of that I made it through...I watched lots of series in 2009. My friend Lucinda also dug Jess. It was her bday a few days ago.

Anyways I happened to find a mixtape some fan put together, songs that illustrate their relationship. I thought it was pretty cool.

Las niñas santas (The Virgin Suicides)
