Ahhh, I LOVE this song. Pretty sure it’s the only thing I’ve heard by this band. I know I heard of them first in 1995 bc I picked up a postcard with them on it from one of those free postcard stands in the US. Yeah, I have supersonic memory like that. I remember thinking “Who r these guyz?!” as I’d never seen them on MTV or anything. Then years ago I became aware my friends Pool & Iva (both keen on brit rock) were into them but I still didn’t take any interest. Well the other day I was reading an interview with Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers where they ask him to list 5 albums that turn him on & he goes When I was doing my finals, I used to wake up every morning to The Charlatans "The only one I know" on my alarm, a definite turn-on & that caught my attention, cause if you listen to it in the morning when you wake up (not to mention for FINALS!)…it’s gotta be good. & it IS! Reminds me of Stone Roses. Totally exudes that ~Faraway Feeling~ (been meaning to make a post about this). Alas I’ve just heard this one song so I should check out the rest of the LP. Hopefully I won’t be disappointed.

Also, since the day I picked up that postcard (which may still be laying around, since I often keep things) I wondered a little about the band name. Wondered if the world charlatan is used in English. I’d never heard it. Charlatán in Spanish means chatterbox. Up until the age of 12 or so I used to get scolded in school for talking too much. & laughing. Occasionally thrown out of the classroom. Well...I'm a Gemini.

It’s Richey James Edwards’ birthday, so here’s a small post dedicated to him!

- He was the rhythm guitarist & main lyricist (along with Nicky Wire) of the Welsh band Manic Street Preachers from 1989 until his ~mysterious~ disappearance in 1995. In spite of not being the singer he was also pretty much the main man…he talked the most in interviews, was the creative force, most stylish (along with Nicky Wire) etc.

- Truthfully he didn’t play guitar too well (or care to practise much) & sometimes during concerts he wasn’t plugged in. While the band recorded their first album he played Sonic the Hedgehog for hours : D

- Studied History in college & graduated @ the top of his class (nerd)

- Favorite authors: Dostoevsky, Mirbeau, Kerouac, Rimbaud, Burroughs, Kafka, Plath...among others.

- Shocked the British press after infamously carving “4 REAL” into his arm with a razor (& then posing for photos) after a discussion with a journalist in which the authenticity of the band was questioned. The wound required 17 stitches

- Friends with the 3 other band members since age 4. Not many more apart from them

- Was called Teddy Edwards as a kid bc he looked like a Teddy Bear ♥

- Liked vodka with orange juice, chocolate & tomatoes

- Kate Moss & Vanessa Paradis

- Had a dog called Snoopy for 17 years

List of Richey’s favorite books I hope to someday have the motivation to read all this stuff & become literate too. I wonder if he liked The Little Prince, though! & I wish he could have read Harry Potter. Srsly.

Bleak albeit relatable (to me). This song is so upbeat though. You can totally dance/jump around to it, seriously. I like when there’s that contradiction between lyrics & music. It happens a lot with Belle & Sebastian, no? They’re singing about sad things but it sounds so cheerful & pretty that you’d never guess.

In my last year of high school we were asked to bring in a song that we felt described us. I took “Crecer” by Attaque 77, an argentine punk band. The song is all about not wanting to grow up. In the video the band’s in a sort of candyland setting. I completely identify with The Little Prince & Peter Pan.

“Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves & it is exhausting for children to have to provide explanations over & over again”, The Little Prince. That one’s written on my wall.

If it’s got to do with being an adult, chances are I don’t like it/don’t know how to do it/am not interested. I had a really happy childhood. Sometimes I watched MTV. I remember most of the videos being by black artists. I loved “Creep” & “Red light special” by TLC. I wanted to be like Left Eye. Actually I wanted to be black. I would have my mom do all my hair in little braids & sometimes wear sweatpants of hers to school bc they were baggy. & I watched lots of shows with only black casts like The Cosby Show, Hangin' with Mr Cooper, Martin, Moesha, Family Matters, etc. This one time I went to summer camp & there was a girl who totally looked like Left Eye. Then again, Left Eye looked like a little kid, which is probably part of what I liked about her. @ school I remember it was hip to like Boyz II Men, Ace of Base & Green Day. As for “Time of my life”, I have the distinct memory of hearing it on the yellow bus in the morning.

A year after moving to Argentina, I went back to DC for a visit & bought the CrazySexyCool album by TLC. I also wanted to get Coolio’s “Gangsta’s paradise” & had to talk my mom into allowing this given that it had the Parental Advisory sticker on it. She eventually complied. My fav songs were “Too hot” & the one that goes “1, 2, 3, 4 get that booty on tha floor gotta gotta get up to get down”.

"Red sleeping beauty" by Mccarthy is one of the songs on the Richey Edwards mixtape. When I hear that title (which I find beautiful) I immediately think of this photo. It's Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of my favorite series. I love her character, by the way. She's such a bitch :D Happy Friday everyone.

// So...the lead singer of Kula Shaker’s mom is Hayley Mills. I grew up watching her in movies like “The parent trap” & “Pollyanna”. As an adult she also played Miss Bliss on “Saved By The Bell”, a TV show I also watched as a kid. I heard of this band through my friend Pool. They have some lyrics in Sanskrit & with a very Hindi feel which is cool, I’ve been listening to them to get “in the mood”. Bc I’m going to be visiting an ashram for a spiritual retreat soon. My favourite badjhans (sacred chants) are Radhe, radhe, govinda radhe & Ganesha sharanam. But there isn’t a Kula Shaker lyric with the latter two (as far as I’ve discovered), whereas they have got songs called “Govinda” & “Radhe radhe”. BUT BUT BUT my very fav song by this band is “Mystical Machine Gun”. & I never noticed until just now that I read the lyrics, but they say "Om nama shivaya" @ the end, which is a mantra...yknow, like "Jai guru deva" which Lennon sings in "Across the Universe".

Marlon JD

Yeah, I will probably be posting a lot about MSP bc I can't stop reading about them.

Seriously, I wonder what it is that makes me (& people in general) get hooked on a song. Apart from the words. Words are just a part of the whole. I often pay attention to lyrics but sometimes I totally don't, sometimes a really long time goes by before I even notice/read them & then I'm like "Oh" bc they mean absolutely nothing to me. But I do find it super interesting to learn their story, if there is one.

Dunno why I like "Marlon JD"(off the MSP new album) so much, but I do. It's explained in this NME interview.



'Marlon JD': Here at least is one that's slight more clear what it's about...
NW: Well, it's clear, apart from the JD bit.
I assumed that was for James Dean.
NW: Well, a lot of people have said that. But the lyrics in all honesty, quite a few of them are stolen, well, not stolen, borrowed from the film, Reflections In A Golden Eye. Marlon Brando does actually say in it (adopts Brando wheeze): "I'd like to live without clutter, live without luxu-reee". So um, the film itself is beautifully shot. Richey did have a fascination with the idea of Marlon Brando, with someone that was so beautiful.
JDB: He loved him because he was the idealisation in his mind of what the ideal man could be, but also because he turned to shit as well.
NW: Exactly, yeah. The idea that he walked around his island in a nappy, eating and fucking.
JDB: That's why he's his kind of like perfect role model, because he rejected his innate beauty and talent turned into Jabba The Hutt.
NW: And Brando is such a complicated... well sometimes he seems utterly superficial, but just all those things... combined. And he did talk to me about that film a lot, Reflections In A Golden Eye, he was really into that, and I think that Young Liars, with Marlon Brando when he's a German officer.
JDB: I think this is one of the lyrics where Nick just proved he can be one of the greatest researchers in the world and just did great research on it.
NW: And you know, to use the sample on it as well, and I actually wrote the tune, apart from the Bloc Party bit.
JDB: And the middle.
NW: The harmonics bit! [Producer] Steve Albini didn't do this one, it's slightly more modern. It's still live, it's still done in the same way. But it's a more Neu!, motorik kind of thing.
I must confess I haven't seen the film.
NW: It is the classic thing where you've got two minutes focusing on Elizabeth Taylor's arse and Marlon Brando staring... I mean, he loved Elizabeth Taylor as well. It's kind of homoerotic. Well, the sexuality in the film is very blurred, it's not homoerotic, it's just that everything is blurred, relationships are blurred, no one loves each other.
JDB: Pain and pleasure's blurred.
NW: The one's that do love each other are not allowed to love each other.... I think bizarrely it might be John Huston, which is odd.
And the horsewhip across the face mentioned in the lyric, that's an actual scene from the film, right?
NW: It is, yeah. He fucks up Elizabeth Taylor's horse, and she humiliates him in front of everyone by whipping him across the face. There's a lot of humiliation in the film. Private and personal and public. So I think it's more for once, I don't think it necessarily hugely relates to him. It's more a kind of general inspiration and we all kind of went down that route.
Maybe more about how Brando's role in that film relates to Brando's whole life.
NW: Yeah, and maybe that then relates back to his admiration for him. And you know, maybe the line, 'learn to live without clutter, to live without luxury' has a slightly deeper resonance. Cos he was ridding himself at that time, he did seem to be ridding himself of any material complications. [Very slowly] It was just books, or watching the TV or listening to music. There wasn't really anything else involved.

Kinda wanna see it now. I have a few movies downloaded to watch, but I gotta admit I'm sorta lazy with films...my attention span is kind of short I guess, & I get impatient. It's hard for me to watch one without wondering when it's gonna be over. That's why I do better with series, I guess. But this is what I got

So I downloaded No such thing by John Mayer, which was one of my fav songs during the summer before I started Uni. Can’t remember how I 1st got to know it, never having heard one of his albums. In fact, the only other song I heard by him was “Your body is a wonderland”. Also, I know nothing about him except for the fact that he’s really tall, is dating (dated?) Jennifer Aniston. & once I saw a disturbing pic of him in a fluorescent crotch sling-thing on ONTD. Anyways, I liked the lyrics to this song for example

It's a very soft song & I like his voice (it's also...soft). I went to Canada in like Jan/Feb of that year & distinctly remember ice skating along the Rideau Canal with this song in my head, thinking I’d soon enter “the real world” since I’d finished high school & was gonna start University etc. Um… “I just can’t wait till my 10 year reunion”…I can’t believe I graduated 7 years ago, omg. I feel almost the same as I did then, though. & it feels like yesterday. I don’t like how fast time goes by : [ This time/years stuff reminds me of that Bob Dylan lyric that says "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now".

Around that time I also really liked Maroon 5 : P I still like "This love"...am gonna download it. That band totally reminds me of my 1st years @ Uni. Also, I remember listening to "The Floor" by Rooney during the bus ride on my very 1st day. A couple of months later I saw The Breeders in concert & then I discovered Cibo Matto. Exciting times.
