The Forever 27 Club, Mate, Nos da

"The statistical anomaly of some of our greatest musicians dying at the age of 27 has created mystery and intrigue. One thing is for sure: this incredible group of people changed the world"
The Forever 27 Club

A tribute to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrisson, Brian Jones...Richey Edwards is also mentioned bc he was 27 when he vanished.

I was talking about this w/ a friend today while we drank mate in a park. MATE! Ha, I never drink mate. It's so Argentine. I tried to get into it during my last year of high school while studying. I had a really cool turquoise thermos. That was probably my favorite part of the whole business. & if you don't know what mate is...

The whole mate drinking thing is like a ritual, actually, but I'm too lazy to explain. Big surprise. Then again, I'm not the person to talk about mate as I don't even drink it. SoOoO...Goodnight nos da...
HEY MANIXFANS! I can't think the word Goodnight or say it without hearing "nos da" in my head immediately afterwards. Um...I can say, in all certainty, that It's Nicky Wire's Fault!
HEY NON MANIXFANS! I was going to explain, but it's one of those things where if you don't like the band, you won't care : P Normally I would explain regardless of this, but again I'm too lazy/tired. BYEBYE!

It's true I'm drowning in a jar of vinegar; Miss Europa Disco Dancer & iPod shuffle love

@ my house word has it that vinegar helps burn fat. So some ppl are putting it on everything. I used to put vinegar -regular or balsamic- on salad but right now I’m not digging either one. My favorite condiments of the moment, what I put on everything, are ginger & curry. I guess you could say soy sauce & sweetener too, but I’ve always liked those.

-

On another note, isn’t it the best when iPod shuffle picks the best songs? Either the best 1st song to start with right after you turn it on & start whatever you’re gonna do, or an excellent succession in general. It makes me feel like life is smiling @ me. I guess it’s not the same 4 this 2 happen when you have 180gb of memory as it is when you only have 2gb. I’ve got 8gb –btw I don’t know what possessed me 2 think that was enough- & I feel especially lucky when it happens. Once I was talking 2 this girl & I said part of my good day had been that iPod had picked a rly awesome song selection 4 me while @ the gym. She was like “You can choose the songs you wanna listen 2, you know?” I should have replied “You are dull & clearly have no magic in your life, you know?” LOSER. Jesus!

Well, today I stepped out the front door into the sunshine & the first song iPod Shuffle picked for me was “Miss Europa Disco Dancer” by MSP which admittedly is quite LOLZ-y but my song of the moment. ♫ It's poetry, sheer poetry, the way you destroy your beauty...

It makes me think of Nicky Wire in a tiara. There are many photos of that but I’m too lazy to look. I started wishing I had MSP fan friends in real life to make a video of us dancing in tiaras, twirling around holding tulles, with a disco ball overhead & this song playing in the background.

Next to come on was “Miss you love” by silverchair & then “Rock classics Vol I” by Rinocerose. Not bad @ all. & thenI arrived where I was going.

The image in this post was made by Nyssa’s boyfriend-bestfriend Dan, who I used to talk to sometimes too, & who was a stone fox as well.

“The child is gone”, Fiona Apple (Gorillaz, Marillion)

Am I tripping or have the Gorillaz grown up? It would make sense, wouldn’t it? They did appear on the scene 9 years ago, after all. Must admit that although I’ve always liked what they do & dug their singles, I haven’t followed their career closely enough to have noticed whether they were entering adulthood or not. But the other day I downloaded their new LP “Plastic beach” (after hearing good things from Georgia & Martin LBT) & happened to see this new photo

I thought “OMFG THEY’VE GROWN UP” bc they just seemed so much taller than I remembered. Are they, or am I spazzing? In the memory I had of them, 2-D wasn’t so LONG. Noodle was also stouter. Btw did you know who is behind the voice of Noodle? Miho Hatori, formely of Cibo Matto! Anyways, the change I am talking about is mostly in 2-D & Noodle. I haven’t rly investigated this or anything but I did come across the following photo from the beginning of the band where 2-d’s face seems clearer, younger, more fresh & innocent than in the “new” one…imo. I dunno.

To be honest when I saw the new photo it was yet another reminder of the fact that so many years have gone by & I was like “O FUX”. Why do cartoon bands have 2 grow up, too?! DNW D : I want movies/TV/cartoons/etc 2 support evasion/fantasy, not emulate, reproduce & reflect reality, PLZ! Where’s my ideal fantasy world in which nobody ever ages?! I protest! I demand 2 speak 2 the person in charge!

Err…yeah so I’ve been listening 2 the new Gorillaz LP. & another Prog Rock album called “Misplaced Childhood” by Marillion…check the cover

Needless to say, with a cover like that, it was really impossible 4 me not 2 listen. The name Marillion reminds me of the word Papillion which is butterfly in French. & the Parisian metro station Mabillion...SIGH, MEMORIEZ.

Honey help me out of this mess
I'm a stranger to myself
But don't reach for me, I'm too far away
I don't wanna talk ''cause there's nothing left to say
So my
Darling, give me your absence tonight
Take all of your sympathy and leave it outside
''cause there's no kind of loving that can make this all right
I'm trying to find a place I belong
And I suddenly feel like a different person
From the roots of my soul come a gentle coercion
And I ran my hand over a strange inversion
As the darkness turns into the dawn
The child is gone

Manics_lolz

I'm in a LOLz mood XD

My smile is a rifle, Light Years

Following the tradition of the previous two Mondays...(Dame) Nicky Wire’s Cheshire Cat Grin/Cara de Feliz Cumpleaños to begin the week in full swing X D

It should be easy bc I’m feeling “All is full of love”. Plus some words courtesy of my pal Jay Kay:

Light years away from the colour of our brotherhood
Light years away from our duty to assistance

You can be light years
Away from serious intention
& I thought I'd change it all
Someday
I'd get to turn mankind
This way

If you don't know you can be light years
Away from your true destination

Until I get with good vibration
I'm never ever gonna get to use that
use that earthly power

Now I got sunshine in my life

I was light years away

Now I got that sunshine in my life

Light years half a million miles from what you wanna be
Did you ever hear about the man who tried to be truly free
Truly free
You know what I mean

Light years will stand between the laws of principle
& now we think we are invincible
But without true power it's unthinkable

But I'm gonna learn to jump back, stand back & use that earthly power
I was light years away
Have you ever been light years away from what you wanna be?

Now I got sunshine in my life.
Light years away from what I wanted to be
Now I got that sunshine in my life
I was light years away & I couldn't come back
Now I got that sunshine in my life
Etc etc etc

Time to be happy

After an awfully ~EMO~ past couple of days, Nicky Wire smilies to start this week on a cheerful note : D

I need to remember this...

- What is the greatest thing you have learned from being in Incubus?
Brandon Boyd: To let be what will be. Sometimes I want to take something too seriously to say, ‘Fuck it,’ & let whatever is going to happen, happen & sort of ride with it. Something being in this band has taught me is to accept each situation & each occurrence in my life as the right occurrence. Whatever happens, as chaotic as it sounds, is the right thing & is perfect & was supposed to happen for me in order for me to grow as an individual. It’s sort of a spiritual philosophy, that being in this band is helping me to understand.

...& relax. Everything will be ok again.

"The only one I know", The Charlatans

Ahhh, I LOVE this song. Pretty sure it’s the only thing I’ve heard by this band. I know I heard of them first in 1995 bc I picked up a postcard with them on it from one of those free postcard stands in the US. Yeah, I have supersonic memory like that. I remember thinking “Who r these guyz?!” as I’d never seen them on MTV or anything. Then years ago I became aware my friends Pool & Iva (both keen on brit rock) were into them but I still didn’t take any interest. Well the other day I was reading an interview with Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers where they ask him to list 5 albums that turn him on & he goes When I was doing my finals, I used to wake up every morning to The Charlatans "The only one I know" on my alarm, a definite turn-on & that caught my attention, cause if you listen to it in the morning when you wake up (not to mention for FINALS!)…it’s gotta be good. & it IS! Reminds me of Stone Roses. Totally exudes that ~Faraway Feeling~ (been meaning to make a post about this). Alas I’ve just heard this one song so I should check out the rest of the LP. Hopefully I won’t be disappointed.

Also, since the day I picked up that postcard (which may still be laying around, since I often keep things) I wondered a little about the band name. Wondered if the world charlatan is used in English. I’d never heard it. Charlatán in Spanish means chatterbox. Up until the age of 12 or so I used to get scolded in school for talking too much. & laughing. Occasionally thrown out of the classroom. Well...I'm a Gemini.

“You talk way too much”, The Strokes
“Bigmouth strikes again”, The Smiths
“All you do is talk”, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
“Pasta de hablar”, Babasónicos
“K talk “, K racters

Now it's the crack of dawn, raining, I barely slept, my stomach feels blah & most of all I've got lazyitis but if I don't go to the gym now I won't be able to @ all bc it's a super busy day. SOOO I will listen to this song of the moment, get ready then make like a banana & split!

Marlon JD

Yeah, I will probably be posting a lot about MSP bc I can't stop reading about them.

Seriously, I wonder what it is that makes me (& people in general) get hooked on a song. Apart from the words. Words are just a part of the whole. I often pay attention to lyrics but sometimes I totally don't, sometimes a really long time goes by before I even notice/read them & then I'm like "Oh" bc they mean absolutely nothing to me. But I do find it super interesting to learn their story, if there is one.

Dunno why I like "Marlon JD"(off the MSP new album) so much, but I do. It's explained in this NME interview.

'Marlon JD': Here at least is one that's slight more clear what it's about...
NW: Well, it's clear, apart from the JD bit.
I assumed that was for James Dean.
NW: Well, a lot of people have said that. But the lyrics in all honesty, quite a few of them are stolen, well, not stolen, borrowed from the film, Reflections In A Golden Eye. Marlon Brando does actually say in it (adopts Brando wheeze): "I'd like to live without clutter, live without luxu-reee". So um, the film itself is beautifully shot. Richey did have a fascination with the idea of Marlon Brando, with someone that was so beautiful.
JDB: He loved him because he was the idealisation in his mind of what the ideal man could be, but also because he turned to shit as well.
NW: Exactly, yeah. The idea that he walked around his island in a nappy, eating and fucking.
JDB: That's why he's his kind of like perfect role model, because he rejected his innate beauty and talent turned into Jabba The Hutt.
NW: And Brando is such a complicated... well sometimes he seems utterly superficial, but just all those things... combined. And he did talk to me about that film a lot, Reflections In A Golden Eye, he was really into that, and I think that Young Liars, with Marlon Brando when he's a German officer.
JDB: I think this is one of the lyrics where Nick just proved he can be one of the greatest researchers in the world and just did great research on it.
NW: And you know, to use the sample on it as well, and I actually wrote the tune, apart from the Bloc Party bit.
JDB: And the middle.
NW: The harmonics bit! [Producer] Steve Albini didn't do this one, it's slightly more modern. It's still live, it's still done in the same way. But it's a more Neu!, motorik kind of thing.
I must confess I haven't seen the film.
NW: It is the classic thing where you've got two minutes focusing on Elizabeth Taylor's arse and Marlon Brando staring... I mean, he loved Elizabeth Taylor as well. It's kind of homoerotic. Well, the sexuality in the film is very blurred, it's not homoerotic, it's just that everything is blurred, relationships are blurred, no one loves each other.
JDB: Pain and pleasure's blurred.
NW: The one's that do love each other are not allowed to love each other.... I think bizarrely it might be John Huston, which is odd.
And the horsewhip across the face mentioned in the lyric, that's an actual scene from the film, right?
NW: It is, yeah. He fucks up Elizabeth Taylor's horse, and she humiliates him in front of everyone by whipping him across the face. There's a lot of humiliation in the film. Private and personal and public. So I think it's more for once, I don't think it necessarily hugely relates to him. It's more a kind of general inspiration and we all kind of went down that route.
Maybe more about how Brando's role in that film relates to Brando's whole life.
NW: Yeah, and maybe that then relates back to his admiration for him. And you know, maybe the line, 'learn to live without clutter, to live without luxury' has a slightly deeper resonance. Cos he was ridding himself at that time, he did seem to be ridding himself of any material complications. [Very slowly] It was just books, or watching the TV or listening to music. There wasn't really anything else involved.

Kinda wanna see it now. I have a few movies downloaded to watch, but I gotta admit I'm sorta lazy with films...my attention span is kind of short I guess, & I get impatient. It's hard for me to watch one without wondering when it's gonna be over. That's why I do better with series, I guess. But this is what I got
- 500 days of summer
- Madagascar 1 & 2
- Ponyo on the cliff
- The Machinist
- Nick & Norah's infinite playlist
- End of Evangelion (I saw, but want to see again)
- Whatever works
- Daft Punk Interstella 5555

"Dot dash" by Wire

Can't get enough of the Manic Street Preachers. I wanna listen to/ read about them/watch vids all day. & I've saved a plethora of pix.

I love Nicky Wire's smile XD On another note I can't hear the name Nicky without thinking of the boy in "Honey, I shrunk the kids" (& glasses, probably bc of him) & my childhood best friend's little brother. Also, "Nickee coco & the invisible tree" by Of Montreal.
