“She said she said”, The Beatles (notable quotables collection)

The best quotes I’ve compiled throughout the past few months. Long, but worth the read. In some cases (which are duly noted) they come from status updates of Facebook friends (if I remembered who they came from : ). Plus some comments

I'm selfish, impatient & a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.
- Marilyn Monroe (DAMN STRAIGHT, SISTER)

I have always had a repulsive need to be something more than human
- David Bowie (so have I, bb) via Ana L

- “The Immortal”, Jorge Luis Borges via Olivia R

You give a little love & it all comes back to you. You know you gonna be remembered for the things you say & do
- Bugsy Malone via Eduardo B

The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because it’s only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies, that last. Stone crumbles. Wood roots. People, well, they die, but things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on & on forever.
- Chuck Palahniuk via Daniela G (I think)

Lots of people want to ride in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.
- Oprah via Pierce R

- Mother Teresa via Jaime K (not sure I agree, but it does sound pretty)

The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis but rather the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for & deserted by everybody
- Mother Teresa via Jaime K

The more sensitive you are, the more certain you are to be brutalized, develop scabs, never evolve. Never allow yourself to feel anything, because you always feel too much
- Marlon Brando, probably via the Manic Street Preachers

Then came human beings. They wanted to cling but there was nothing to cling to
- Camus via the Manic Street Preachers

Life begins on the other side of despair.

The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud

Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses
- Dorothy Parker via Julia Frakes (I love boys with glasses, though. I think glasses are HOT. Especially thick black nerdy ones à la Rivers Cuomo. So if I were a man, I would TOTALLY make passes @ girls with glasses. I just think it’s a really clever phrase)

Any kind of pain is probably her hobby
- Frank Zappa via Tini D

Would it have been worth while

How would I like to be remembered? As a person who came & brought light to the world, Some escapism. Also as the voice for the voiceless children, because I love them. I’m living for the children. If it weren’t for the kids, I would throw in the towel. A baby, a child - now that’s amazing. They’re little geniuses, you know, little geniuses. They really are.

A founding text of 20th-century pop culture is Peter Pan, premiered in 1904. At the start of a century obsessed with adolescence, J.M.Barrie wrote a play about a boy who never grew up. From the beginning, the boy was played by a young woman; this tradition continues to the present day. As Gerber states, Peter Pan is played by a woman, because "a woman will never grow up to be a man".

The Forever 27 Club, Mate, Nos da

"The statistical anomaly of some of our greatest musicians dying at the age of 27 has created mystery and intrigue. One thing is for sure: this incredible group of people changed the world"
The Forever 27 Club

A tribute to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrisson, Brian Jones...Richey Edwards is also mentioned bc he was 27 when he vanished.

I was talking about this w/ a friend today while we drank mate in a park. MATE! Ha, I never drink mate. It's so Argentine. I tried to get into it during my last year of high school while studying. I had a really cool turquoise thermos. That was probably my favorite part of the whole business. & if you don't know what mate is...

The whole mate drinking thing is like a ritual, actually, but I'm too lazy to explain. Big surprise. Then again, I'm not the person to talk about mate as I don't even drink it. SoOoO...Goodnight nos da...
HEY MANIXFANS! I can't think the word Goodnight or say it without hearing "nos da" in my head immediately afterwards. Um...I can say, in all certainty, that It's Nicky Wire's Fault!
HEY NON MANIXFANS! I was going to explain, but it's one of those things where if you don't like the band, you won't care : P Normally I would explain regardless of this, but again I'm too lazy/tired. BYEBYE!

Tilikum (whale)/Dawn Brancheau (trainer)

If you forget my name
You will go astray
Like a killer whale
Trapped in a bay

- “Bachelorette”, Bjork

So for some reason I can’t stop thinking about the case of Tilly/Dawn. I dunno whether to refer to it as the orca who killed her trainer or the trainer who was killed by an orca. I feel so bad for both of them. On the one hand, an animal taken from its natural habitat @ two years of age then kept in captivity for 30, taught to perform for an audience, etc. On the other hand, Dawn (the trainer), whose childhood dream since she first visited Sea World @ the age of 10 was to be an orca trainer. Even for those of us who think it’s wrong to keep animals captive & make them perform for the entertainment of the people…those trainers love them. The animals are their lives. Dawn was her trainer for 16 years. SIXTEEN YEARS. & then Tilly killed her. That’s just so sad. She weighs 4 tons, the biggest orca in captivity in the world. Was she aware of her power & what she was doing? Or was she just having a bad day & letting off some steam? I think animals do know...Also she’d been “involved” in the deaths of two humans before…but not 100% directly - once a trainer fell into a tank with Tilly & two other orcas, one of which drowned her. But not Tilly!- another time a dude with mental problems appeared dead in Tilly’s tank. Apparently officials said he died of hypothermia but it was also said that he had a bite mark.

So I dunno how I feel about it. Maybe she did it on purpose, but being in captivity had driven the poor thing batty. Is that an excuse? I DUNNO. It's often hard for me to make up my mind as I agree with both sides.

On another note, I’ve always been an animal lover. As a child after seeing Free Willy, I called the 1800 number @ the end of the movie & made a donation to the I-dunno-what foundation for whales/orcas (maybe it was Save the whales?). They mailed me a tape with the Michael Jackson song from the film, among other stuff. I think that was my very 1st tape ever.
